Choosing Effective Medications for Back Pain

Share

Pain is the most commonly reported symptom of illness and medication is the only first hand treatment to cure pain. When it comes to back pain, there are a number of medications available. The most common medication that is known to be effective for same is acetaminophen, opioids, NSAIDs and antidepressants in some cases. It is observed that no one medication is good over the other. This goes for all the classes of medicines.

As no single medicine can be called the best, it becomes hard to decide which one should be taken. At last, the patient ends up measuring the pros and cons of every medicine- its side effects and the duration it cures the pain in. Also, the side effects depend from person to person. A medicine that is good for one person may not be good for the other. Another thing that comes under consideration is the cost of the medicine.

How do you come to a conclusion about which medicine works best for you? There is no other solution than the trial and error method. If a particular method you have been put on is causing much trouble and you feel is not working for you, you may report it to the doctor. The doctor would examine the problem and discontinue its use and in place of it would prescribe some other medicine in the same category.

If your pain is short term, you may be prescribed with muscle relaxers, NSAIDs and Tylenol and in case you are suffering severe backache the doctor would give you adjuvant medication like antidepressants and in some cases even narcotic drugs like opioids. But, before you resort to these medicines, you need to know what they are and how do they work to release the pain.

NSAIDs are the most commonly prescribed medicines for backache, these are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. They do release pain effectively but at the same time they also affect the heart severely as a side effect. Tylenol or acetaminophen is an over the counter available medicine, it cures short term pain and mild fever. An overdose of Tylenol can cause liver failure. So, never take it more than the prescribed amount. Then there are adjuvant medications that are considered better than the NSAIDs and other over the counter available medicines. It is observed that these medicines work well if taken along with the medicines prescribed by the doctors.

Resorting to medicines is not all you need to do to cure backache; you must also consider other treatments like the massages and exercises to counter the problem permanently.
