Self Therapy For Back Pain

What if back pain strikes you at odd hours? What if you do not have a doctor at hand to help you out with the problem? Well, there is nothing to worry as there are several things that you can do to deal with back pain on your own.

Before you begin to start dealing with back pain, you need to make sure that you are not irritating your back. More than often, back pain is a result of incorrect activity. When back pain strikes, the first thing that you need to do is revise your activities through the day. Try to ascertain which of the activities that you carried out through the day could be responsible for your back pain. You could be sleeping in the wrong position. Or, the back pain may be a result of an incorrect lifting technique. Simply avoiding these activities could help you deal with sciatica and other forms of back pain to a great extent.

Even if you have been able to figure out the root cause of the problem, you will have to deal with pain because the damage has been done. To fight the pain, perhaps the easiest thing that you can do is take OTC medications. There are several OTC medicines for sciatica and other forms of back pain, readily available in the market. These medicines fall in the category of NSAIDs i.e. Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs. They work by reducing the inflammation that leads to pain.

While OTC medications are extremely effective in treating back pain, they do come with their fair share of side effects. Hence, if your pain is mild, you may consider trying some simple home therapies. Applying ice is one of them. When trying to ice down back pain, most people make the common mistake of applying ice directly at the site of pain. However, this needs to be avoided.

Try this method as suggested by American Physical Therapy. Take a plastic bag and fill it with crushed ice. Now place a towel at the site of pain. Place the homemade bag on the towel. Ice for fifteen to twenty minutes. Remove the ice and take a break for 40 minutes. Re-apply the ice after 40 minutes and repeat the cycle after 48 hours after onset of pain.

Get a massage. There is nothing as effective as a massage when it comes to dealing with back pain. You could gently massage your own back or have someone else do it for you.

You can use these self therapy tips for sciatica as well as any other form of back pain. If your pain is mild to moderate, chances are that you will not have to see a doctor.
