Sciatica is one problem that can affect one and all. However, there are many people who are definitely more at risk as compared to others. Of course, lifestyle plays a major role in determining the risk levels of sciatica. But, there are certain factors that increase the level of risk considerably. So, you could be at risk too.

Age is one of the primary risk factors for sciatica. As you age, the spine and the body begin to degenerate, hence increasing the risk for sciatica. Aging leads to various changes in the spinal disc, along with bone spurs and spinal stenosis.

The degeneration of spinal disc begins from the age of 30 onwards. So, if you are in the middle age bracket, you are definitely are at high risk of sciatica. However, conditions like spinal stenosis and bone spurs, which lead to sciatica usually occur at the age of 50.

While anyone above the age of 30 is at a risk of sciatica, it is people who fall in the age bracket of 30 to 50 years who are most prone to the problem. The reason for the same is that people in this age group are most active. This increases the likelihood of any kind of injury and damage to the spine.

People who lead a sedentary life are also at a high risk of sciatica. When you are sitting for long hours at a stretch, there is increased pressure on the sciatic nerve. This increases the risk for sciatica. People who sit and work at computers all day long or drive for long hours at a stretch are in the high risk category for the same reason.

Are you involved in a job that requires you to frequently lift heavy objects? If yes, then you are at a risk of sciatica. Lifting heavy loads can exert immense pressure on the spine and can even lead to twisting of the spinal discs. This can cause sciatica. As a matter of fact, lifting heavy objects is one of the most prominent causes of spinal problems.

Walkers and runners also fall in the high risk category. The reason for the same is that when you walk or run, the muscle in the hip called Piriformis Muscle contracts. Repeated contraction of this muscle for long periods irritates the sciatic nerve, which in turn leads to sciatica. When you are walking or running, the Piriformis Muscle tightens, to propel you forward.

These are just some of the factors that could make you more susceptible to sciatica. Watch out for these factors if you want to avoid the problem before it attacks you.
