Does Sciatica Not Let You Sleep Properly?

Sciatica is the irritation in sciatic nerve which causes pain and inflammation. The pain flows from lower back region to the foot via legs and sometimes the irritation becomes considerably intolerable which may compel you to keep awake for long hours. Sleepless nights could make the condition extensively frustrating.

To avoid or lessen the pain you may follow the two typical postures which would relieve your pain.

1.    Extension based activities- First, lean backward as much as you can and just remember not to force yourself into doing it. Second, while going to sleep try to lie on your stomach which can aggravate your pain encouraging extension.
2.    Flexion based activities- First, in this posture you have to lean forward to the extreme possible limit. Second, lie on your back and put a pillow under the knees keeping your legs straight. This will also help in dissipating away the pain.

Flexion based activities may not strictly prove to be true remedies and may contribute to worsening the painful condition. Comparatively, extension based activities are better then flexion based ones. Else, you can go with either of the options which provide better relief to your pain.

In case neither of the options is feasible, try lying upon either of your sides but take care that the top leg is bent slightly and knees also have support by pillows. When you do this, the legs remain parallel to the bed and do not drop down. This stretching or twisting action can aggravate your pain.

There is also a firm relationship between your mattress and sciatic pain. The sciatic pain may also be the sign that your mattress is not appropriate. The mattress may not be the sole cause behind the pain but it might be contributing to it majorly. To avoid this problem, you should use firm mattresses. Look into your selection of mattress. Go for a mattress that helps you feel relaxed and comfortable.

Thus, you can get over the sleep problems that you may be experiencing due to sciatica. Extreme pain can undoubtedly lead to sleepless nights. But, it is always advisable to do the best you can!
