There are a number of treatments for sciatica but pregnancy is a crucial phase so women must be careful before taking any. If the cause is the position of the child's head, then only the birth of the baby will be able to resolve your problem. At the most, your doctor would suggest you bed rest and a few exercises to feel better. Sciatic pain subsides with time, say 6 weeks or so. During pregnancy, it is better to take minimum of medications. At the most, you must pay a visit to a physiotherapist; a manual therapist helps release the sciatic pain more efficiently.
The therapist would also recommend some really effective exercises that would strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, abdomen and the back. To your amazement, these exercises would make your labor and delivery easy. Many women also advertise chiropractic treatments for the cure of sciatica during pregnancy. Well, if you consider a chiropractic treatment then see to it that your healthcare provider is well trained to handle prenatal cases.
With other kinds of treatments on, pregnant women suffering from sciatica must develop a healthy lifestyle. Maintain a right posture; too much slouching can put pressure on the sciatic nerve which would lead to severe pain in the lower back. You must wear flat shoes and sleep on a rigid mattress. Keep a pillow in between your legs while lying down or sleeping. While getting off the bed, lie on one side first and then get up. Do not rise up from the bed with a jerk; this would worsen your situation even more.
However, there are some cases so severe that medication is required. Dealing with sciatica during pregnancy is not an easy job. But, you don't need to panic. As soon as you experience a symptom, you must consult you doctor immediately and follow his advice sincerely. Ignoring sciatic pain especially during pregnancy has the possibility of landing you in a bigger trouble. So, stay alert as you are now responsible for two lives.
