Top Three Mistakes You Should Avoid In Sciatica
| Share |
Sciatica is a very severe condition of the back in which the sciatic nerve is at great discomfort due to various reasons. It becomes difficult to perform chores with ease as the problem severs. It might make you immobile too as the pain eventually moves down to the legs. Many people do not understand this condition well and in a hurry tend to commit some mistakes they have to pay for later. Here are the top three mistakes that every sciatica patient must avoid.
The first mistake would be to resort to surgery in a hurry. Majority of surgeons are reluctant to perform surgery on the sciatic nerve whereas there are others who recommend this treatment right from the beginning of sciatic symptoms. These doctors do not consider other simpler means to cure or manage the problem. For your knowledge, there are at least 80% people who experience relaxation without surgery. The surgery is known to be successful initially but the scar tissue and the mechanical stresses beside the spine can lead to major issues later. It is seen that the long term success rate of the surgery is only 50%. So, it is best to keep this treatment as the last option.
But, there is an exception here, in cauda equina syndrome and in saddle anesthesia, performing a surgery is the only resort. Otherwise, surgery must be avoided till the time you can.
The second mistake that people tend to do is they get to their normal activities too soon. It is not ideal to get back to your routine work schedule immediately after you see an improvement in your symptoms. The major reason for sciatica is the herniated disc. The fluid from the disc moves out of its space and compresses the nerves (mostly the sciatic nerve) in the area. Once a treatment gives you relief from the pain caused by this condition, you tend to believe that you are apt to function normally. You must know that the ease you feel is not the cure. So, even if your physical therapist is asking you to do so, do not push yourself as you might land yourself in a bigger risk.
The third mistake that even the health providers commit is to believe that sciatica can be cured. The symptoms of sciatica can be managed but not cured. It so happens that the bones of the humans along with the spine degenerate with time, causing the symptoms to become more severe and frequent.
The best option for the sciatica patients is to avoid unnecessary activities, take precautions and follow a healthy exercise regime.
