Anti Inflammatory Medications Offer Sciatica pain Relief

Share

The scientific name for sciatica is 'sciatic neuritis' and is symptomised by pain which may be a result of general compression or irritation of one of the five spinal nerve roots. The pain attacks the lower back, buttocks and the various parts of leg and foot. The severe pain may result into numbness, muscular weakness, tingling and difficulty in moving the leg. The symptoms are mainly felt on either side of the body. When it comes to treatment of the same, an anti-inflammatory medication is a good option. Though the evidence of effectiveness of these medicines is limited, they provide considerable relief. Anti-inflammatory medication includes NSAIDs or oral steroids. Placebos are used for acute sciatica.

NSAIDs commonly referred to as Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain medications are the most commonly used medications. They are especially used for the patients suffering from:

* Arthritis
* Bursitis
* Tendonitis

These medications are easily accessible over-the-counter in the form of Ibuprofen, Motrin, and Aleva among others. You may also buy some of them like, Celebrex, DayPro, and Relafen via a doctor's prescription. NSAIDs prove to be effective at providing pain relief and reducing swelling. They are analgesic and anti-inflammatory. NSAIDs eliminate the pain by acting upon the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzyme. This is the enzyme which creates inflammation. Hence NSAIDs debar prostaglandins from synthesizing these enzymes and result into elimination of pain. The normal analgesics (paracetamol) associated with anti-inflammatory drugs do not prove to be good because they have no anti-inflammatory effects. This only results in reducing pain while having minimal effect on inflammation.

In the past recent years there are newer medications available in the market. These medications are commonly known as COX-2 inhibitors. As NSAIDs work against COX-1 and COX-2, the new medications (Celebrex) available in the market work against COX-2 and COX-1 is allowed to work in the normal order. This is because COX-1 is more significant in production of protective lining which reduces the risk of gastric issues. The newer NSAIDs also have lesser risk of causing stomach ulcers.

Side effects
NSAIDs have their share of side effects too.

* Long term use of NSAIDs should be avoided as it can cause gastric erosions and yield stomach ulcer.
* Overuse of  paracetamol can cause liver damage.

However, the newer NSAIDs do not work much better against COX-2 and hence have fewer side effects. Though NSAIDs are available over the counter, you must consult a doctor  before you go for any, to get rid of the sciatic pain.
