Though pain relieving medications are commonly used to treat sciatica, they are not the only solution to the problem. You can treat the problem with the help of various alternative therapies too. These alternative therapies help you treat the problem naturally without incurring any of the side effects that come with OTC medications.

Acupressure
Acupressure is a gentle and non-invasive therapy. It involves applying pressure at specific points to ease the pain. Here in, consistent pressure is applied to various points in the body, to stimulate the acupressure point. This pressure releases the blocked Qi or vital energy and provides relief. It is believed that the blocking of Qi in the body leads to pain.

Acupuncture
This one is quite similar to acupressure as it too aims at releasing the blocked energy in the body.  However, acupuncture involves inserting needles at specific points instead of applying pressure with fingertips. But, don't worry as acupuncture is absolutely non-invasive and painless.

Yoga
Yoga involves various stretching exercises that can ease the tension in muscles and compression of nerves. This alternative therapy can be even more beneficial if the cause of sciatica is pirformis syndrome. However, you need to be careful when practicing yoga so that you do not stress your spine further.

Biofeedback
Biofeedback is slightly different from other alternative therapies as it does not deal with the pain directly. Instead, it helps you change your reaction towards the pain. This is a mind body therapy that alters your psychological reaction to pain. Here in, the patient is taught various relaxation techniques, visualization, physical and mental techniques. These are used by the patient to control his reaction towards pain.

Herbal treatment
Sciatica can also be treated through the healing power of herbs. There are various herbs that can prove to be extremely effective in treating sciatic pain. Some of the most effective herbs for treating sciatica include devil's claw, oil of wintergreen, St John's wort, Horsetail, chamomile, and turmeric amidst several others.

Ice and heat
Ice reduces the pain as well as inflammation and offers relief. To use ice for sciatic pain, you can apply a commercial ice bag on the affected area. However, for better results it is recommended that you use a packaged bag of frozen peas. Follow this up with moist heat. Make note that moist heat always works better for sciatic pain than dry heat. So, use a hot water bottle instead of cloth that has been heated in the microwave.

Hydrotherapy
The soothing properties of water are used to treat sciatica. Soak yourself in warm water for 30 minutes to experience relief. Using a hot water bottle can also prove to be of great help.
